The best passive cooler from QOOL – smart solution for your outdoor cooling
What is a passive cooler?
A passive cooler reliably keeps food and drinks cool – completely without electricity. Instead of an electric cooling system, it uses powerful cooling elements and particularly efficient insulation to retain the cold for a long time. QOOL coolers rely on state-of-the-art vacuum insulation panels combined with specially developed Temperature Elements , which enable constant temperatures in different cooling areas as needed – even under extreme conditions.
How does the passive cooler work?

The QOOL Box achieves its outstanding thermal insulation performance through vacuum insulation panels that are installed in all sides of the box, in the lid and also in the base.

The QOOL Temperature Elements contain so-called phase change material and can absorb or release energy at a certain temperature.

If you combine the QOOL Box with the QOOL Temperature Elements, the temperature inside can be kept constant for many days.
Why a passive cooler from QOOL is the best choice
Comparison of passive and active coolers – what you should consider
Anyone who wants reliable cooling on the go is often faced with the choice between active, electrically powered cool boxes and passive, completely power-free models. For genuine outdoor use, however, passive cool boxes are usually the far better choice: They are lighter, more robust, quieter, maintenance-free, and completely independent of electricity. Premium passive cool boxes like the QOOL Box, in particular, set new standards in cooling performance. Thanks to vacuum insulation and precise temperature elements, the passive cool box keeps food and drinks consistently cool for many days, even in hot weather and without any power source. This allows you to remain completely self-sufficient and maximum flexibility at all times.
What is the difference between active and passive coolers?
Active cooling boxes utilize technologies such as compressor, absorption, or Peltier systems. They require a continuous power source, for example, in a car, camper, or at a wall socket, to actively cool down or maintain the temperature. While compressor boxes can reach very low temperatures, they are heavy, noisy, more expensive, and dependent on electricity. Thermoelectric boxes are cheaper and lighter, but typically only manage to cool to 15–20 °C below ambient temperature and quickly reach their limits in summer.
Passive coolers operate entirely without electricity. They rely on insulating materials such as PU foam, EPS, or, as with QOOL, state-of-the-art vacuum insulation derived from the food and pharmaceutical industries. While conventional passive coolers only maintain temperature for a few hours, the QOOL passive cooler, thanks to its large-area vacuum insulation and specially developed temperature elements, achieves stable cooling for up to 10 days. This makes it completely maintenance-free, silent, extremely robust, and entirely independent of power sources.
In short:
Active cooling box = power-dependent, powerful, but heavy and prone to failure
Passive cool box = requires no electricity, is self-sufficient, lightweight, quiet and (in the QOOL Premium version) offers extremely long cooling times
What are passive coolers particularly suitable for?

For camping, outdoor activities, or any use requiring extended cooling periods, passive models quickly prove to be the superior choice. They operate without electricity, are lightweight, quiet, and easy to use – ideal for those seeking true self-sufficiency. While many conventional passive coolers only provide short-term cooling, the QOOL passive cooler, thanks to its unique vacuum insulation and integrated temperature elements, maintains a stable temperature for days. Whether it's the freezer compartment, refrigerator temperatures, or fresh food zones, the temperature remains constant – all without the need for cables.
Compared to other passive cool boxes, heavy compressor boxes, or noisy thermoelectric models, QOOL stands out with its low weight, high robustness, and completely silent operation. The box is durable, maintenance-free, and manufactured in Germany. Its reliable cooling performance of up to 10 days and robust construction result in excellent value for money. This makes the QOOL passive cool box particularly well-suited for anyone who travels frequently and flexibly outdoors and wants to remain self-sufficient.

Frequently asked questions about passive coolers
The length of time a passive cooler stays cold depends heavily on the type and quality of its insulation. Simple coolers with standard insulation typically only keep ice cubes cold for 1 to 3 days. High-quality passive coolers like the QOOL Box achieve significantly longer cooling times—up to 10 days without power, depending on the Temperature Elements, ambient temperature, and usage.
Thanks to its vacuum insulation and individually selectable temperature elements (+2°C to +8°C, 0°C, -18°C, etc.), the QOOL Box offers constant cooling or even freezing – even in high outside temperatures. The exact cooling time depends on how well the box was pre-cooled, how often it is opened, and whether it is placed in the shade or in the sun.
The QOOL box achieves its impressive thermal insulation performance through the use of vacuum insulation panels that are installed on all sides, in the lid and in the base of the box. In combination with the QOOL Temperature Elements, the temperature inside can be kept constant for several days. The box can be opened several times without any problem, as long as the lid is closed in such a way that no air exchange takes place.
Which passive cooler is best depends on the intended use – models that cool reliably without electricity, are durable and have impressive heat output are particularly in demand.
The QOOL Box meets all these requirements and has received numerous awards, including the ISPO Award, the Design & Innovation Award, the Green Product Award, the German Innovation Award, the Outdoor Editors' Choice Award and the Plus X Award.
With its vacuum insulation and Temperature Elements, it offers up to 10 days of self-sufficient cooling – ideal for demanding applications such as sailing trips, beach days or expeditions.
Yes, the QOOL Box works with a combination of high-tech insulation, so-called vacuum insulation panels, and temperature elements, which allow you to set the temperature inside the box. The super-insulated shell maintains the temperature for up to 10 days, and the temperature elements set the temperature. Depending on the phase-change material they are filled with, the elements have different temperature ranges: Frozen, Cool, and Fresh. These elements must be frozen. You then set the selected temperature inside the box.
The appropriate cooler size depends on how many people need to be served and how long the operation will last. As a rough guide, here's what you need:
- approx. 20–30 liters for day trips or a weekend
- approx. 30–45 liters for several days or short trips
- approx. 50–70 liters for longer trips or families
- over 70 liters, e.g. for groups or expeditions
The QOOL Box M (27 liters) is ideal for 1-2 people on multi-day trips, such as sailing, camping or at the beach.
The QOOL Box L (43 liters) is suitable for 2-4 people and offers enough space for fresh food, drinks or even temperature-sensitive products – with up to 10 days of cooling capacity without electricity.
