The QOOL Box cools for up to 10 days without electricity. But only if the Temperature Elements are prepared correctly. Anyone who skips this step or does it half-heartedly sacrifices cooling performance. Anyone who does it correctly will still have fresh food after a week, even in the most remote spot.
Here you will find everything you need to know about preparation.
How do the Temperature Elements actually work?
The QOOL Temperature Elements work with specially developed PCM technology. PCM stands for Phase Change Material. The principle: When freezing, the material stores a large amount of energy. During slow thawing, it releases this energy in a controlled manner and maintains a constant temperature.
This is the decisive difference to ordinary cool packs from the supermarket. A normal cool pack usually consists of water and releases a temperature of approx. 0 °C when thawing. This is already too cold for many foods and unsuitable for precise temperature control. The QOOL Temperature Elements, on the other hand, maintain a defined temperature range constantly, depending on the variant between -20 °C and +2 °C, and for days.
All ingredients of the Temperature Elements are harmless and approved for use with food.
The two temperature ranges
QOOL offers Temperature Elements in two versions, depending on what you want to cool:
Cool (-2 °C to +2 °C)
For everything that belongs in the refrigerator at home. Fresh food, drinks, dairy products, snacks. This range corresponds to a normal household refrigerator.
Frozen (-20 °C to -10 °C)
For frozen foods. Fish fillets, meat, ice cream or BARF for the dog. This range corresponds to a freezer and lasts even in midsummer.
Both variants keep their temperature range constant for up to 10 days, provided the box is loaded correctly and the Elements are completely frozen.
How to pre-cool the Temperature Elements correctly
The most important step happens before you even start packing. For optimal cooling performance, the Temperature Elements must be completely frozen before they are placed in the box.
- Place Temperature Elements in the freezer or deep freezer, at a minimum of -18 °C.
- Freeze for at least 10 hours. Overnight is ideal.
- Check briefly before inserting: The inside must be completely solid. If there are still soft spots, the Elements need more time.
- Done. The Elements are ready for immediate use.
A common mistake: The Elements are only placed in the freezer for a few hours and then used half-frozen. This halves the cooling performance. It is better to insert the Elements the evening before and then drive off relaxed the next morning.
Also recommended: Store the QOOL Box in a cool place before the trip, for example in the cellar or garage. This is not a must, but it reduces the amount of heat that the Elements have to compensate for during the first use.
How to place the Elements in the box
The placement of the Temperature Elements has a direct influence on the cooling performance. The basic principle: Cold air sinks downwards. Elements placed at the top therefore cool the entire interior particularly effectively.
QOOL Box M
For maximum cooling performance of up to 10 days, we recommend 4 Temperature Elements of the 1-liter size.
- Place one element upright on each side of the handles.
- Place the remaining two elements on top of the cooled goods.
The upper elements have the greatest effect because the cold air flows from there through the entire cooled goods downwards.
For trips of 3 to 5 days, 2 elements are also sufficient. These can be placed on the side, but ideally on top of the cooled goods for optimal effect.
QOOL Box L
For the QOOL Box L, we recommend a surround system with 6 Temperature Elements that forms a real cooling cube around your cooled goods.
- Place one large square element on the bottom of the box.
- Insert the 4 side elements with the straight side against the respective wall.
- Place the second square element on top as a lid.
The cooled goods are thus completely surrounded by Temperature Elements. The result is an even, very stable temperature maintenance over the entire operating time.![]()
For trips of 3 to 5 days, not all elements are necessary here either. As an alternative to the Box L configuration, we offer a set of 6 smaller elements, which were originally developed for the QOOL Box M and are also suitable for the Box L with correct placement. The smaller QOOL Elements fit guaranteed into every freezer compartment.
Can I also use the QOOL Box without Temperature Elements?
Yes, that is possible. If the box is filled with already cooled food or drinks, the cooled goods will stay at temperature for about 1 to 2 days. This is sufficient for a day trip or a short journey.
However, anyone who wants to maintain a specific temperature range for several days cannot do without the Temperature Elements. Only in combination with the Elements does the QOOL Box achieve its full performance of up to 10 days.
Checklist before driving off
- Temperature Elements frozen for at least 10 hours at -18 °C?
- Inside of the Elements completely solid?
- QOOL Box stored cool or pre-tempered?
- Elements correctly placed (on top of the cooled goods)?
- Food already pre-cooled and packed?
If you can tick all five points, your QOOL Box is optimally prepared. Regardless of whether you are traveling for three days or ten days.
