Walking Guide: Cold without electricity - The passive cool box from QOOL
What do you do when you're out and about and the dog food needs to stay cold, even frozen, without electricity? We were impressed by the QOOL® cool box, which we tested while camping. Everything stays cold or even frozen for weeks without a power connection, depending on your needs and the cooling element. It's ideal for dog owners who feed their dogs raw food, for example, and for those who like to throw frozen food into the pot for themselves when they're camping.
The cool box solves these problems
Anyone who feeds their dog raw food and uses frozen products or freezes portions themselves will be familiar with these questions: “What do we feed them on vacation?” or “How do we manage this on the long weekend?” There are a number of problems behind this.
1. Insufficient cooling capacity: Frozen products thaw in normal cool boxes even during long car journeys.
2. No space: The freezer compartments in holiday homes and campers are often too small.
3. Limitations when camping: Being self-sufficient when camping is impossible due to the lack of power supply for the frozen goods
While searching for a solution, we came across the QOOL® Box, which overcomes all of these challenges. We initially viewed the manufacturer's promises of "works without electricity", "keeps ice cubes frozen for up to 21 days", "constant internal temperature in every climate zone in the world" with a certain amount of skepticism. But the Würzburg-based manufacturer of the box - the company va-Q-tec - comes from the industry and has many years of experience in transporting food, vaccines and other goods that require refrigeration. The company has received numerous innovation and start-up awards. This naturally made us curious.
The secret: high-tech cooling elements and space material
The manufacturer va-Q-tec provided us with a blue QOOL® box in size M and four cooling elements for frozen food free of charge for this test. As soon as it was delivered, we noticed how heavy the box was. With the cooling elements, it weighs just under 7 kilograms. However, the weight is also part of the box's secret. The high-tech cooling elements are significantly larger and heavier than normal ice packs. And the box itself is made of vacuum insulation panels that are also used in space travel. This is how we tested the cool box: The manufacturer recommends cooling the cooling elements for at least 72 hours at -18 degrees. Since we didn't want to be away for 21 days, we cooled the elements at a normal freezer temperature of around -8 degrees. They become solid and milky. We then filled the box about 2/3 full with frozen goods, placed two cooling elements on the side and two more on top of the frozen goods. With constant outside temperatures of over 20 degrees during the day and around 15 degrees at night, we opened the box on average three times a day. Twice to take out food, once to show the skeptical neighbors that everything was still frozen. The box was exposed to direct sunlight for several hours a day (at the end of July). After twelve days, our frozen food was still frozen through, not a single spot had thawed or even thawed.
Our conclusion: Super cool! The QOOL® Box keeps all the promises made by the manufacturer! For us, the box is a real game changer when it comes to transporting and storing frozen food. We are delighted and recommend it without reservation.
