Fishing with a roof tent: freezing fish with the QOOL cool box
A Scandinavian fishing trip with a roof tent presents anglers with a new challenge: how do you keep the fish you catch frozen for days? In the past, Henning from schonzeitvertreib.de used a polystyrene cool box to bring the fish home frozen. This method made it possible to travel back from southern Norway for up to 14 hours without the fish thawing. But for a ten-day trip along the fjord coast, a new solution was needed.
Sounding out the market
Henning considered various cooling methods:
Passive cooling with daily addition of fresh ice
Active cooling via the car's power connection while driving and passive cooling during rest stops
Active cooling with a powerful battery
A freezer box with compressor and external power supply
None of these options were really satisfactory, either due to high costs or concerns about overloading the car battery.
The QOOL solution
Then Henning discovered QOOL, a company that specializes in passive coolers with extremely long cooling times. These coolers use innovative insulation technology combined with passive cooling elements.
Insulation + passive cooling
QOOL offers cool boxes in two sizes and five different temperature ranges. The "Standard Frozen" (-20° to -10°) element is perfect for transporting frozen goods. After a consultation, Henning was convinced that the QOOL box was ideal for his purpose. A minimum refrigeration period of 10 days was guaranteed. So he opted for the QOOL Box Eco+ L model with six "Standard Frozen" temperature elements.
Trunk freezer
Henning chose the large QOOL Box Eco+ L in order to have enough space for the frozen fish. With external dimensions of 525 x 525 x 410 mm, the box takes up a lot of space in the trunk, but the space required is worth it. The interior space of the box is not wasted on the outward journey either: Henning plans to take frozen food with him to avoid Scandinavian supermarket prices. According to the manufacturer, the box can be loaded with up to 150 kg, so several pieces of luggage can be stacked on top.
Small "life hack"
To make optimum use of the QOOL Box's volume, Henning uses paper bags from a supermarket delivery service that fit exactly inside the box. He pre-freezes the bags with fish fillets in the freezer at his home and then places them perfectly shaped in the QOOL Box.
The challenge of cooling elements
The strong cooling elements require a pre-cooling period of at least 72 hours to keep the temperature in the box constant for 10 days. The panels are tailor-made for the inside walls of the box, but do not fit into Henning's fridge-freezer combination. The solution: a drawer is removed to make room for the six plates.
Conclusion
Henning is delighted with his plans for the QOOL Box Eco+ L and the six "Standard Frozen" temperature elements. Now it remains to be seen whether the box not only keeps things cool, but can also really keep the caught fish frozen for 10-14 days on the return journey.
